A small back garden gets a major refresh with more usable space and a luxurious partially sunken cedar spa. This L-shape backyard needed some creative design ideas for how to utilize the space in a less rectilinear way – and the flowing paving pattern and variety of paving materials help to create flow and interest through the garden.
There is an apartment building next door, so privacy and screening was key. The masonry wall provides a long-lasting material alternative to fencing, which helps with sound and privacy. The Ipe louvers at the top were specifically designed to allow sunlight through and screen from the apartments next door. The wall provided an additional opportunity for design interest with inset spaces for décor. The entry gate was also reconsidered, custom built with Ipe wood and installed with fabricated metal inserts – the design of which is also reflected in a storage door at the end of the garden.
